Last week start my two-week module on mathematical biology where I get to study travelling waves in-depth. A travelling wave in biology is a phenomena that changes an “energy” through space and time. You can think of it as ripples in a pond as the energy extends from the centre origin to the outer limits. It is very useful in biology to model things like travelling waves, such as predator/prey models, the ripples on some myxobateria fruiting bodies, and the movement of pigment in mammalian eyes. It is just one example of how you can find mathematics in biology and that makes it beautiful.

Climbing the academic cliff face
I’m prepping to get back to the office on Monday, and I am in the process of studying statistics in order to get ready for my next set of classes. Between that, the paper I am supposed to be reading and the coalescent theory textbook that I am working my way through I feel like there is a giant cliff face of learning in front of me. At least that is how I was feeling yesterday, today I got into my second stats lecture and it was on probability and that is something that I understand and can work with. So I am feeling like I can do this at the moment and that is making me feel good.
Happy New Year
Hi
Welcome to my new personal blog about what ever I feel like talking about. I have a blog dedicated to science and atheism but I felt that I wanted a blog to talk about more personal or random subjects. Hence this blog. I hope that you will check back and that I you like what you find.
